New Orleans rapper BG, renowned for his early success with Cash Money Records in the 1990s as part of the Hot Boys, has been mandated by a recent court ruling to submit his future song lyrics for government approval.
U.S. District Court Judge Susie Morgan’s decision on June 25, 2024, stemmed from BG’s supervised release conditions after his recent arrest for probation violations.
Prosecutors sought to prevent him from glorifying gun violence in his songs and performances.
While Judge Morgan upheld BG’s right to free speech, she ruled that he must provide copies of future lyrics to authorities before releasing them.
This measure allows prosecutors to ensure his content aligns with the terms of his rehabilitation.
BG’s legal troubles escalated earlier this year when he performed alongside fellow convicted felons Gucci Mane and Boosie Bad Azz in Las Vegas, without prior court approval.
Both artists have felony convictions, a violation of BG’s release terms, which require court permission for such associations.
BG, who served 12 years of a 14-year sentence for federal weapons charges before his release in September, was arrested in 2009 after a routine traffic stop in New Orleans uncovered guns and a loaded magazine in a stolen vehicle.
The court’s decision marks a significant restriction on BG’s artistic freedom while under supervision, emphasizing compliance with strict release conditions aimed at promoting his rehabilitation.
