A tragic incident unfolded in West Palm Beach, Florida, last week when an 18-year-old woman, Kelvi McCray, was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend, 19-year-old Keisean Shaw, while she was on a FaceTime call with friends.
Authorities believe Shaw then took his own life.
The fatal shooting occurred on the evening of March 6 at a residence on 13th Street off North Australian Avenue in the Lake Mangonia neighborhood near Gaines Park.
McCray, who was sitting and eating dinner while FaceTiming with three friends, was abruptly attacked by Shaw, who entered the residence and shot her multiple times in the head, neck, and back.
A neighbor, who heard the gunshots, attempted to intervene but was unable to access the house immediately. By the time they were let in by McCray’s mother, the young woman was found on the floor, fatally wounded.
West Palm Beach Police spokesperson Mike Jachles provided details of the incident, stating that one of the friends on FaceTime served as a witness, aiding in the quick identification of Shaw as the assailant.
When officers arrived at the scene, both McCray and Shaw were rushed to St. Mary’s Medical Center, where McCray succumbed to her injuries later that night, while Shaw passed away the following day.
Shaw, who was well-known to police and wanted on warrants for aggravated assault with a firearm and domestic battery by strangulation, was charged with first-degree murder before his death. Authorities revealed that Shaw had engaged in a dangerous chase with law enforcement the night before the shooting.
McCray and Shaw had recently ended their relationship, but Shaw continued to reside in the same house due to lack of alternative accommodation. Investigators disclosed that the two had known each other for five years and dated for over a year before McCray decided to end the relationship.
McCray, described as a model, stylist, and influencer, had a growing online presence, with thousands of followers on her Instagram account, which surged after her untimely demise.
Despite the devastating loss, McCray’s family is determined not to let Shaw’s actions define them. Her uncle, Ricky Aiken, expressed admiration for McCray’s resilience and spirit, stating that their refusal to succumb to devastation reflects McCray’s character and legacy.
