Florida Man Arrested For Attempted Bank Withdrawal Of 1 Cent

Michael Fleming

A Florida man found himself in police custody after an unconventional incident at a Chase Bank branch in Lady Lake last week, where he attempted to withdraw just one cent, leading to allegations of robbery without a weapon.

Michael Fleming, 41, reportedly entered the bank on U.S. Route 441 and handed a withdrawal slip for $0.01 to a teller.

When informed that such a withdrawal was not possible, Fleming allegedly made a concerning remark prompting the teller to alert law enforcement.

Sumter County Sheriff’s deputies swiftly responded to what was described as an “in-progress bank robbery” and found Fleming waiting calmly inside. He was promptly arrested without resistance.

During questioning, Fleming admitted to his actions, explaining that after being turned down for the one-cent withdrawal, he chose to remain in the bank, expecting to be apprehended by authorities. His stated goal, according to police reports, was to be arrested.

Despite his intentions, no money was exchanged during the incident, and it was later confirmed that Fleming did not hold an account with Chase Bank. Authorities also noted that Fleming has no prior convictions related to robbery.

Following his arrest, Fleming was initially held without bond, but subsequent court proceedings saw him qualify for indigent status and receive a court-appointed attorney. His current bond stands at $5,000 pending further legal developments.

The case has garnered attention for its unusual nature, prompting discussions on the implications of attempting such a seemingly minor transaction in the context of bank security protocols.
