New York City leaders and community organizations are mobilizing in anticipation of a potential Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) crackdown, following the election of Zohran Mamdani as the city’s next mayor.
Concerns over heightened federal enforcement have prompted officials to review strategies to protect residents and safeguard city operations.
LaToya McBean Pompy, a prominent immigration attorney, shared on Instagram that political, civic, and business leaders are actively preparing in case federal agents begin a heightened presence across Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island.
“According to reports, city officials are looking at what San Francisco did during similar federal enforcement threats and are planning how to prevent a disruptive situation here in New York,” McBean Pompy said in a video accompanying her post.

The discussions aim to anticipate the challenges undocumented residents may face. Legal experts are urging residents to know their rights, document any encounters with federal agents, remain silent during interactions, and have a plan for legal representation if detained. Green card holders and U.S. citizens are also encouraged to carry proof of status and be prepared to assert their rights.
While federal law enforcement actions are a normal aspect of ICE’s mandate, the city’s concern stems from Mamdani’s progressive platform and recent statements on immigration reform. Officials are keen to avoid scenarios that could disrupt communities or business, drawing lessons from past federal interventions in other major U.S. cities.
McBean Pompy emphasized that preparation is key: “Now is the time to know your rights, speak with an immigration attorney, and ensure you have a safety plan in case ICE conducts an operation. Being informed and ready is essential.”
This proactive approach highlights the tension between local governance and federal immigration enforcement and reflects growing concerns among communities nationwide about potential crackdowns under the current administration.
