Letitia James Stands Her Ground: ‘You Come For Me, You Come Through All Of Us’ After Federal Indictment

Attorney General Letitia James

New York Attorney General Letitia James appeared publicly for the first time since her federal indictment Monday, delivering a fiery, defiant address that underscored her political resilience and deepened the legal and political drama surrounding one of the nation’s most visible state prosecutors.

James — a Democrat who has frequently clashed with former President Donald Trump — spoke before a packed rally in Washington Heights for mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, where the crowd erupted in chants of “We love Tish!” as she took the stage.

Without directly naming Trump, James accused “powerful voices” of attempting to “weaponize justice for political gain,” describing the indictment as part of a broader erosion of democratic norms.

“We are witnessing the fraying of our democracy, the erosion of our system of government,” she said to sustained applause. “This, my friends, is a defining moment in our history.”

In her sharpest moment, James declared, “You come for me, you come through all of us,” framing her legal battle not as a personal crisis but as a collective test of principle.

Facing Fraud Charges, But Not Backing Down

Federal prosecutors in Virginia last week charged James with bank fraud and making false statements related to her 2020 purchase of a $137,000 home in Norfolk, Virginia.

Prosecutors allege James misrepresented her intent to occupy the house as a primary residence — a requirement for the mortgage — and instead rented it out to tenants. If convicted, James would automatically be forced from office under New York law.

In a video statement following the indictment, James dismissed the allegations as “baseless,” accusing federal authorities of continuing what she called a desperate weaponization of the justice system.”

Her remarks Monday suggest that the attorney general — who has built her career on confronting political power, corporate corruption, and systemic injustice — intends to fight the case as aggressively as she has pursued others.

A History of Clashes With Trump

As attorney general, James made national headlines for her civil fraud lawsuit against Donald Trump and his family business, alleging they inflated the value of their assets to obtain favorable loans and insurance terms.

That case resulted in a landmark judgment against Trump last year, with a New York judge finding that he had committed fraud — though an appeals court later reduced the penalty while upholding the key finding.

Trump and his allies have since targeted James, painting her as a politically motivated prosecutor. Trump has repeatedly called for her resignation and, in recent months, encouraged federal officials to investigate her personal and financial dealings.

The timing of James’s indictment — just months after Trump returned to the White House — has fueled claims among Democrats that the case is politically motivated.

Political Fallout and Future Stakes

James’s appearance alongside Mamdani, a progressive state lawmaker running for New York City mayor, underscored her continued standing among the city’s Democratic base. Mamdani himself has labeled the federal case against her “a shameless act of political retribution.”

If convicted, James’s removal from office would mark one of the most consequential political collapses in recent New York history, reshaping the state’s balance of power and its posture toward Trump-era accountability.

Yet for now, James appears undeterred. “We will not capitulate,” she vowed, her voice rising over the crowd. “Every rule of law, every democratic norm — we must defend them all.”

Her words echoed both the defiance of a prosecutor under siege and the conviction of a public official who views her case as a referendum on justice itself. Whether voters — or jurors — see it that way remains to be seen.
