A Spelman College student is facing multiple criminal charges following a wrong-way crash on Interstate 75/85 in Atlanta that resulted in serious injuries and the temporary closure of the highway.
According to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP), the crash occurred at approximately 3:20 a.m. on March 7, 2025, near the North Avenue exit. Law enforcement officers observed a 2012 Mercedes-Benz traveling northbound in the southbound HOV lane. Before the vehicle could be stopped, it collided with a 2018 Buick Encore.
The driver, Addison Thornton, 20, was identified as a Spelman College student. A passenger in her vehicle sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital.
Legal Charges and Arrest
Following the crash, troopers conducted a DUI test, which Thornton failed. During the investigation, authorities also discovered that she was in possession of a fraudulent driver’s license.
Thornton was taken into custody and booked into the Fulton County Jail on the following charges:
- Driving under the influence (O.C.G.A. § 40-6-391)
- Driving on the wrong side of the roadway (O.C.G.A. § 40-6-40)
- Possession of a fraudulent driver’s license (O.C.G.A. § 16-9-4)
- Serious injury by motor vehicle (O.C.G.A. § 40-6-394)
- Underage alcohol consumption (O.C.G.A. § 3-3-23)
Institutional Response
Spelman College confirmed that both Thornton and her 17-year-old passenger are enrolled at the institution. In a statement, a Spelman College spokesperson said:
“We are aware that two Spelman students were involved in an off-campus traffic accident on March 7, 2025. At this time, we are gathering more information and have been in touch with the families of both students.”
Potential Legal Implications
Thornton’s DUI charge could carry significant penalties under Georgia law, including license suspension, fines, and possible jail time. Additionally, the charge of serious injury by motor vehicle is a felony under O.C.G.A. § 40-6-394, which could result in a lengthy prison sentence if convicted.
The possession of a fraudulent driver’s license may also lead to separate criminal proceedings, with potential implications for Thornton’s student status and future legal standing.
At this time, there is no official update on the condition of the victims involved in the crash. Thornton remains in custody as legal proceedings move forward.
