In a developing legal battle, Bishop T.D. Jakes, the prominent leader of The Potter’s House megachurch in Dallas, Texas, is confronting serious sexual assault allegations from two brothers, Duane and Richard Youngblood.
The accusations, dating back over four decades, have led to a defamation lawsuit filed by Jakes, who vehemently denies the claims.
Allegations Surface
Duane Youngblood, 58, publicly accused Bishop Jakes of sexual misconduct during appearances on the Larry Reid Live YouTube show in late October and early November 2024.
He alleges that when he was 18 or 19, Jakes attempted to kiss him during a private meeting and later proposed a secretive sexual relationship, offering lifelong financial support.
Following these claims, his brother, Richard Youngblood, 62, provided a sworn affidavit supporting Duane’s account. Richard alleges that during a ministry trip, Jakes climbed into his bed, pressed against him, and made inappropriate remarks.
Jakes’ Response and Legal Action
Bishop Jakes, 67, has categorically denied the allegations, describing them as a “campaign of lies.”
On November 24, 2024, he filed a defamation lawsuit against Duane Youngblood in a Pennsylvania federal court, asserting that the accusations are part of an extortion attempt, especially given Duane’s demand for $6 million to resolve the matter privately.
Jakes contends that the allegations have caused significant emotional distress and damage to his reputation. He also highlights Duane’s criminal history, noting his status as a registered sex offender with prior convictions for sexually assaulting teenage boys.
Regarding Richard’s claims, Jakes suggests they stem from resentment after he declined to offer him employment approximately a decade ago.
Health Implications
The stress from these allegations has reportedly taken a toll on Jakes’ health.
On November 23, 2024, he experienced a medical emergency during a sermon, which his attorneys suggest may be linked to the emotional and physical strain caused by the accusations.
Medical professionals have ruled out a stroke, and Jakes remains under medical supervision.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
In January 2025, Duane Youngblood filed a motion to dismiss the defamation suit, reiterating his allegations and including his brother’s supporting affidavit.
Jakes’ legal team continues to challenge the credibility of the Youngblood brothers, citing Duane’s criminal background and questioning the motives behind the allegations.
The case is ongoing, with both parties steadfast in their positions.
