Teacher Sentenced to 4 Years in Prison for Sexual Assault of Student, Encouraging School Violence

Kay Ewer

A Colorado special education paraprofessional has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student and encouraging him to bring a gun to school to shoot a fellow teacher.

Kay Ewer, 28, admitted to felony charges, including sexual assault on a child “by one in a position of trust,” in a case that has shocked the community and raised concerns about school safety.

Ewer, who worked at Brady Exploration High School from 2015 to 2023, developed an inappropriate relationship with the student, which came to light in late 2023 after staff discovered concerning writing in class.

Investigators later uncovered evidence of multiple sexual encounters, extensive digital communication, and disturbing text messages.

In these messages, Ewer allegedly urged the victim to bring a gun to their meetings and even directed him to shoot a colleague in the leg.

During the sentencing, the victim’s mother delivered an emotional statement, describing the profound betrayal and emotional damage caused by Ewer’s actions.

“I trusted her as a teacher and never imagined she would exploit my son in this way,” she said.

Ewer expressed remorse in court, apologizing to the victim and his family. In addition to her prison sentence, she will be required to register as a sex offender for life and adhere to strict probation conditions upon her release.

Ewer is also facing separate drug charges stemming from an arrest that occurred while she was out on bond in this case.

The case has sparked discussions about the vulnerabilities of students and the responsibilities of educators in positions of trust.
