DOJ Launches Investigation Into Rankin County Sheriff’s Department for Civil Rights Violations

Ranking County Detention Center

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has launched a sweeping federal investigation into the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD) in Mississippi, following serious allegations of civil rights violations.

The probe comes just months after six deputies from the department were sentenced to lengthy prison terms for torturing and sexually assaulting two Black men while on duty.

According to the DOJ, the investigation will seek to determine if the RCSD has engaged in a pattern or practice of unconstitutional or unlawful conduct.

The investigation will focus on potential instances of excessive force, unlawful stops, searches, arrests, and the use of racially discriminatory practices.

This federal inquiry stems from the egregious actions of six Rankin County deputies who referred to themselves as the “Goon Squad.”

In a 2023 case, these deputies were convicted and sentenced for torturing and sexually assaulting two Black men, a crime they admitted was racially motivated. The shocking case drew national attention and prompted calls for systemic reform within the department.

The DOJ has stated that the investigation will include gathering testimonies from local residents and other potential victims of RCSD misconduct.

This outreach is aimed at ensuring the department’s practices are thoroughly reviewed and any ongoing violations are addressed.
