Vybz Kartel, the influential dancehall artist born Adidja Azim Palmer, was released from prison on Wednesday after spending 13 years behind bars.

The Jamaica Court of Appeal ruled unanimously against a retrial for Kartel and his co-defendants, Shawn Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St. John, in connection with the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams.

Despite the absence of Williams’ body, Kartel and his co-defendants were convicted in 2014 for allegedly killing Williams over missing unlicensed firearms.

However, the recent decision by the Court of Appeal cited several factors, including Kartel’s deteriorating health due to Graves’ Disease and a heart condition, as well as concerns about the lengthy time elapsed, lack of witnesses, and insufficient financial resources.

Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop stated:

“We conclude that the interest of justice does not require a new trial to be ordered.”

Kartel’s release was set in motion when the U.K.’s Privy Council overturned the convictions in March, pointing to juror misconduct involving an alleged bribery attempt.

The final decision rested with the Jamaican Court of Appeal after receiving approval from King Charles.

Outside the courthouse, fans celebrated the news of Kartel’s release.

The 48-year-old artist has had a significant impact on the music industry, collaborating with international stars like Rihanna, Eminem, and Jay-Z.

He has also achieved notable success on the Reggae Albums chart, with his latest project, “Born Fi Dis (Prelude),” released in 2021.
