Police have taken a suspect into custody after the home of Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass was broken into Sunday morning while the house was occupied.
Around 6:40 a.m., a person smashed a window to gain entry to the Getty House, the mayor’s official residence, as stated by the Los Angeles Police Department in a social media post. A 29-year-old suspect has been apprehended, according to a police spokesperson.
Although Bass was inside at the time, no one in the family sustained harm, confirmed a spokesperson for the mayor.
“Mayor Bass and her family were not injured and are safe. The Mayor is grateful to LAPD for responding and arresting the suspect,” stated the spokesperson, Zach Seidl.
Detectives are currently investigating the motive, including whether the mayor was specifically targeted, as noted by a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation. The source mentioned that the process of booking the suspect was still ongoing Sunday evening.
Officers are actively seeking search warrants for digital devices used by the suspect, the source added.
Neither Seidl nor police have provided additional details about the incident. The investigation is still ongoing, according to police.
The nondescript Tudor-style home stands on a street corner in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Windsor Square, blending seamlessly into the lineup of historic mansions that surround it.
This marks the second time Bass has been the victim of a home break-in while serving as a public official.
In September 2022, while Bass was serving in the US House of Representatives and running for mayor, a different home she was residing in was burglarized, resulting in the theft of two firearms.
“It’s unnerving and, unfortunately, it’s something that far too many Angelenos have faced,” she commented at the time.
