A new proposed law in Tennessee could soon allow customers to sip on wine or cocktails while getting their hair done, offering a unique twist to the salon experience.

If approved by Governor Lee, the bill would come into effect on July 1, bringing a change to the way some businesses operate.

Currently, many salons and barbershops offer complimentary drinks to enhance the customer experience.

However, under the proposed law, these establishments would have the option to charge for alcohol, provided they also offer food alongside the drinks.

State Rep. Jake McCalmon, R-Franklin, who introduced the bill alongside co-sponsor Rep. Antonio Parkinson, D-Memphis, explained that the legislation aims to create a new type of business license specifically tailored for establishments interested in selling alcohol.

He noted that while the concept may seem niche, it opens up opportunities for both new and existing businesses.

“This just creates a new type of business license that would allow certain types of businesses to sell if they want to. It’s kind of a niche industry … It opens up an avenue for additional businesses or existing businesses that may want to do that,” McCalmon stated.

The proposed law has sparked interest among salon owners in Memphis, with some expressing enthusiasm for the opportunity to offer alcoholic beverages to their customers.

However, opinions vary, with some establishments opting not to pursue the option.

If the bill is signed into law, it could potentially transform the salon experience for customers across Tennessee, offering them the chance to indulge in a glass of wine or a cocktail while receiving their beauty treatments.
