Influential Foreign Policy Group Sends Message to Trump Warning Him About International Law Violations in Iran War

Trump Swearing-in

An Indonesian foreign policy leader has issued a public appeal to Donald Trump, arguing that recent U.S. military actions in the Middle East violate international law and long-standing legal norms governing the conduct of states.

The message, delivered in a video circulated on social media by Dino Patti Djalal, was presented as a statement from the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia, a civil society group focused on international affairs.

In the video, Djalal said the statement reflects the concerns of many Indonesians regarding recent geopolitical developments and the potential legal implications of military actions involving the United States and its allies.

Allegations of Violations of International Law

In the message, Djalal criticized what he described as U.S. involvement in the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, arguing that the targeted killing of a foreign head of state would violate international law.

“The premeditated effort to murder the supreme leader of Iran is against international law and norms,” he said, adding that such actions would also conflict with principles established under the United Nations framework, including the United Nations Charter.

He also referenced longstanding U.S. legal prohibitions on the assassination of foreign leaders, suggesting that such actions could raise questions under American law as well.

Warning About Global Precedent

Djalal warned that if powerful nations begin treating the targeted killing of foreign leaders as acceptable conduct, it could destabilize global norms governing the use of force.

“If a direct military action to kill foreign leaders is now considered fair game, then any member of the 193 countries around the world would also see this as fair game,” he said in the message.

He argued that such precedents could undermine international security structures and potentially increase the risk of wider conflict.

Regional and Economic Concerns

Beyond legal questions, Djalal said the conflict could also have broader economic consequences for countries far from the immediate conflict zone.

He noted that rising geopolitical tensions and oil prices could contribute to inflation and economic strain in Indonesia, including higher food prices and slower economic growth.

Civil Society Appeal

The video encourages viewers to share the message with policymakers and members of the public in the United States.

The Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia describes itself as one of Southeast Asia’s largest independent grassroots groups focused on foreign policy and international cooperation.

While the message represents the views of a civil society organization rather than an official government position, it highlights growing international debate over the legal boundaries governing military force, state sovereignty, and targeted killings in modern conflicts in the wake of the joint strikes on Iran by the U.S. and Israel.
