Authorities in Nigeria have charged the driver of former heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua following a highway crash that killed two of the boxer’s close associates and left Joshua injured, police confirmed.
Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was arraigned on Friday, January 2, 2025, before the Sagamu Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State in connection with the fatal collision. Police sources told the BBC that Kayode faces multiple criminal charges, including causing death by dangerous driving.
The crash occurred earlier in the week on the busy Lagos–Ibadan expressway in southwestern Nigeria, when a Lexus SUV carrying Joshua and members of his team collided with a stationary truck. Joshua’s personal trainer, Latif Ayodele, and strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami, were pronounced dead at the scene.
Joshua, 36, who was a passenger in the vehicle, sustained injuries and was taken to hospital following the collision. He was discharged on Wednesday after receiving medical treatment, according to officials.
Prosecutors have filed four charges against Kayode, including causing death by dangerous driving, reckless and negligent driving, driving without due care, and driving without a valid driver’s license, a police source said. Under Nigerian law, causing death by dangerous driving is a serious offense that can carry significant prison time if a conviction is secured.
The court granted Kayode bail in the sum of 5 million naira (approximately $3,200), and he was remanded pending fulfillment of the bail conditions. The case has been adjourned until January 20 for further proceedings.
The incident has drawn international attention due to Joshua’s global profile as one of boxing’s most recognizable figures. Images circulated widely showing the boxer being assisted from the wreckage following the crash.
The deaths of Ayodele and Ghami have prompted an outpouring of tributes from the boxing community and fans worldwide. Legal observers note that the case will hinge on findings related to driver conduct, vehicle condition, and the circumstances surrounding the parked truck on the highway.
As the matter proceeds through Nigeria’s judicial system, authorities have said investigations into the crash remain ongoing.
