A Mississippi businessman was sentenced Friday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for orchestrating the contract killing of his 22-year-old daughter-in-law, whom he reportedly believed brought shame to his family because she was Black.
Chiman Rai, 68, an Indian immigrant, was convicted by a Fulton County jury on Thursday of seven criminal charges, including felony murder and burglary, for masterminding the April 2000 death of Sparkle Michelle Rai. Jurors deliberated less than two hours before returning the guilty verdict. Prosecutors had sought the death penalty.
The sentencing closes a case that remained unsolved for three years before witnesses came forward in 2004, leading investigators to connect the killing to the victim’s father-in-law.
The Killing: Stabbing and Strangulation in Victim’s Apartment

Sparkle Rai was found dead in her Georgia apartment on April 26, 2000, weeks after her wedding to Chiman Rai’s son, Ricky Rai. The victim had been stabbed and strangled with a vacuum cleaner cord. Her seven-month-old daughter, Analla, was present in the apartment at the time of the killing but was physically unharmed.
The marriage had taken place approximately one month before the killing. Sparkle had given birth to her daughter around the time of the wedding.
According to trial evidence, Chiman Rai had first offered Sparkle $10,000 to leave his son. When she refused, prosecutors argued, he instead used the same sum to arrange her death.
Prosecution Case: Racially Motivated Murder
During the eight-day trial, prosecutors portrayed Chiman Rai as a man driven by racial bias who could not accept that his son had married and fathered a child with a Black woman.
The state called Rai’s former cellmate from the Fulton County Jail, who testified that Rai referred to Black people as “scum.” Prosecutors also introduced statements from Ricky Rai, who told investigators following the killing that his father was “a little racist.”
The prosecution’s case relied heavily on testimony from two intermediaries who said they helped arrange the killing. Willie Fred Evans and Herbert Green testified that they served as middlemen in the murder-for-hire scheme, connecting Chiman Rai to the hit squad. Both have pleaded guilty to lesser charges and cooperated with prosecutors. They are expected to receive probation.
Prosecutors said the $10,000 payment was passed to brothers Cleveland and Carl Clark. Cleveland Clark, who prosecutors allege carried out the killing, also faces the death penalty.
Defense Argument: Cooperating Witnesses Unreliable
Defense attorneys presented a starkly contrasting image of their client. They depicted Chiman Rai as a hardworking businessman who, while preferring his son marry an Indian woman, was not a racist.
The defense called a steady stream of Rai’s Black customers, fellow inmates, and business associates, each of whom described him as tolerant and compassionate. Attorneys noted that Rai had taught mathematics at Alcorn State University, a historically Black college in Mississippi, and later operated a supermarket in a predominantly Black area of Jackson. He also helped purchase a hotel in Louisville, Kentucky, where he installed his son Ricky as general manager in 1998.
Defense attorney Jack Martin attacked the credibility of the state’s cooperating witnesses, arguing that Evans and Green lied to cover up their own roles in the killing. He suggested the killing may have been a robbery gone wrong, possibly connected to drug money.
“You could have 100 liars testify to something,” Martin said. “And it’s not worth anything.”
Victim’s Family Responds
Following the guilty verdict, Sparkle Rai’s father, Bennet Reid, spoke to reporters as he blinked through tears.
“I’m feeling very much relieved,” Reid said. “I feel justice has been served for my granddaughter and for my family. My daughter’s not going to come back, but she’s smiling now.”
Post-Script
Chiman Rai died in prison in 2022 while serving his life sentence.
Five men were ultimately charged in connection with the contract killing. Sparkle Rai’s infant daughter, who witnessed the attack, survived. Her story remains a reminder that racial bias can manifest across all communities and in the most devastating forms of violence.
