Lumberton Township Mayor Gina LaPlaca was arrested on March 17, 2025, for allegedly driving under the influence with her young child in the vehicle.
The arrest followed reports from a concerned driver who recorded LaPlaca’s vehicle swerving erratically and nearly colliding with a utility pole. Authorities later traced the vehicle to LaPlaca’s home, where they found her and her child inside the car along with an open alcohol container.
NBC Philadelphia reports that police say LaPlaca admitted to drinking while driving. She underwent a field sobriety test, which she failed, leading to her arrest.
She now faces multiple charges, including driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, and child endangerment. She was released with a summons and is scheduled to appear in court on April 15, 2025.

Legal and Political Ramifications
LaPlaca, who has served as mayor since 2021 and was elected to the Lumberton Township Committee in 2020, recently resigned from her role as business administrator for Neptune Township on March 10, 2025. However, she remains politically active as the chairwoman of the Lumberton Democrats.
Her arrest has raised concerns about her political future, but some officials have expressed support for her decision to seek help. Lumberton Deputy Mayor Lori Faye issued a statement emphasizing the township’s commitment to governance and community support.
“As a Committee, our priority is doing what is best for Lumberton. As human beings, we care about our residents and each other’s well-being. The Committee supports Mayor LaPlaca’s decision to seek the help she believes she needs. Further, we wish her all the best in her next steps for self-help. Finally, we will fully respect her family’s request for privacy,” Faye stated.
Personal Struggles and Public Reaction
LaPlaca’s husband, Jason Carty, a political activist and former executive director of the New Jersey Brewers Guild, acknowledged her struggles with addiction and urged the public to show compassion. He emphasized her dedication to public service and asked for understanding rather than judgment.
Police have not provided further details regarding LaPlaca’s arrest or ongoing investigations. However, her case is expected to draw significant attention, given her public role and past political involvement.
Her court appearance on April 15, 2025, will determine the next steps in her legal proceedings.
