More than 20 federal workers have resigned from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), citing concerns over the direction of the agency under Elon Musk’s leadership.
The mass resignations, which included engineers, data scientists, and product managers, raise legal and ethical questions about federal employment standards, government accountability, and data security.
Federal Workers Resign in Protest
According to AP News, 21 staffers who initially joined DOGE—formerly known as the United States Digital Service—submitted their resignation letters early Tuesday.
Their departure underscores mounting tensions between career civil servants and Musk’s administration. In their collective statement, the former staffers asserted:
“We swore to serve the American people and uphold our oath to the Constitution across presidential administrations. However, it has become clear that we can no longer honor those commitments.”
Concerns Over Qualifications and Security Risks
The former employees allege that many of the individuals Musk appointed to DOGE lack the necessary expertise, instead being Musk loyalists with little technical understanding.
They pointed to an unsettling January incident in which they were reportedly subjected to an impromptu interview by White House ‘visitors,’ believed to be connected to DOGE.
These visitors allegedly scrutinized the employees’ political beliefs and qualifications in a manner that suggested a lack of technical knowledge, raising concerns over the agency’s ability to maintain national security and safeguard sensitive data.
The former staffers explicitly stated their refusal to engage in practices they believed could undermine the federal government’s core systems, writing:
“We will not use our skills as technologists to compromise core government systems, jeopardize Americans’ sensitive data, or dismantle critical public services. We will not lend our expertise to carry out or legitimize DOGE’s actions.”
White House Responds
The Trump administration has dismissed concerns over the resignations, indicating that it remains committed to its vision of government reform.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt issued a statement minimizing the impact of the departures, saying:
“Anyone who thinks protests, lawsuits, and lawfare will deter President Trump must have been sleeping under a rock for the past several years. President Trump will not be deterred from delivering on the promises he made to make our federal government more efficient and more accountable to the hardworking American taxpayers.”
Legal and Ethical Ramifications
The resignations bring up significant legal questions regarding federal employment protections, whistleblower rights, and ethical obligations of government technologists.
If the allegations of politically motivated hiring practices and security concerns are substantiated, they could result in congressional inquiries or lawsuits.
