Elon Musk’s X Reaches $10 Million Settlement in Trump’s Lawsuit Over Twitter Ban

Elon Musk and Donald Trump

Elon Musk’s social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), has reached a $10 million settlement in the lawsuit filed by Donald Trump over his account’s suspension following the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

According to The Wall Street Journal, a federal appellate court recently approved a voluntary dismissal of the lawsuit, with both parties agreeing to cover their own legal costs. The settlement marks the end of a high-profile legal dispute in which Trump argued that his First Amendment rights were violated when Twitter banned him.

Trump originally sued Twitter in 2021, claiming the suspension amounted to unconstitutional censorship. However, a federal judge dismissed the case in 2022, ruling that Twitter, as a private company, was not bound by the First Amendment.

When Musk acquired Twitter in late 2022 and rebranded it as X, he reinstated Trump’s account, though the former president has rarely used it since.

This settlement follows a similar case involving Meta, which last month agreed to pay $25 million, including $22 million earmarked for Trump’s presidential library, despite defending its decision to suspend his accounts.
