Meta Platforms has agreed to pay approximately $25 million to settle a lawsuit filed by former President Donald Trump, following the suspension of his social media accounts after the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.
The settlement allocates $22 million to the nonprofit organization designated for Trump’s presidential library, with the remaining funds covering legal fees and other related expenses.
This legal dispute originated when Meta suspended Trump’s accounts, citing violations of platform policies in the aftermath of the Capitol incident.
Trump’s legal team contended that the suspension infringed upon his First Amendment rights and alleged bias against conservative viewpoints.
The settlement reflects Meta’s decision to resolve the matter without prolonged litigation.
Notably, in 2017, Meta donated $1 million to Trump’s inaugural committee, and CEO Mark Zuckerberg was among several billionaires granted prime seating during Trump’s swearing-in at the Capitol Rotunda.
As of now, neither Meta nor Trump’s legal representatives have publicly commented on the settlement.
