Civil rights attorney Ben Crump is demanding answers after Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by Miami-Dade police just hours before the team’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Hill was handcuffed and held on the ground by officers, in a scene captured on video and widely circulated online. One video shows an officer kneeling on Hill’s back while he is face down, surrounded by four officers.
Hill was pulled over near Hard Rock Stadium, the site of the game, and later cited for reckless driving and driving without a license, according to his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. Despite the citation, Hill and his supporters, including attorney Crump, are questioning the need for the aggressive treatment.
Crump, known for representing high-profile victims of police misconduct, took to Instagram to express his concerns.
“Tyreek Hill, star receiver for the Miami Dolphins, was detained and put in handcuffs by police just hours before his game… We NEED answers!” Crump’s involvement is likely to intensify public scrutiny of the incident, especially given his history of advocating for justice in similar cases.
After the game, Hill reflected on the incident, stating:
“Everybody has bad apples in every situation… I want to be able to use this platform to figure out a way to flip this and make it a positive on both ends — on my end, and then also Miami-Dade — so that way we can team together and do something positive for the community.”
Hill maintained that he was respectful throughout the encounter and expressed a desire to someday become a police officer himself.
Hill further questioned why he was handcuffed at all.
“I wasn’t disrespectful ‘cause my mom didn’t raise me that way. Didn’t cuss, didn’t do none of that,” he said, adding, “What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?”
Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie Daniels announced that the department would be reviewing body camera footage from the incident, emphasizing her commitment to transparency and accountability.
Hill’s teammates, including defensive tackle Calais Campbell, were instrumental in deescalating the situation. Campbell, who was also briefly handcuffed, stated:
“For him to put handcuffs on me, I felt some kind of way… But that just goes to show you our resilience.”
Despite the disruption, the Dolphins went on to win 20-17, with Hill recording seven catches for 130 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown.
During his endzone celebration, Hill pretended to be handcuffed, a symbolic gesture highlighting the earlier events.
As the police department investigates, Crump’s involvement is expected to keep the pressure on authorities to provide a full and transparent explanation.
