Atlanta police are investigating a disturbing incident described by organizers as a “hateful attack” against vendors participating in the Global Black Pride celebration.

The attack, which occurred on Tuesday night at the Starling Atlanta Midtown hotel, involved the vandalism of property belonging to the vendors.

Details of the Incident

According to Fox 5 Atlanta, the property was defaced by an intoxicated hotel guest who damaged a rainbow flag and other items associated with the event.

The vandalism included the destruction of tables, pamphlets, and memorabilia scattered on the floor.

Event organizers have condemned the act, calling it a targeted expression of hate against the Black and Brown LGBTIQ+ community.

“This act of hatred at a gathering aimed at recognizing Black and Brown LGBTIQ+ people from around the world is disheartening and deeply troubling,” the organizers stated.

They expressed gratitude to the Atlanta Police Department and the Mayor’s Office for their prompt response and support.

Global Black Pride’s Response

In a statement posted on Instagram, Global Black Pride emphasized their commitment to continue celebrating pride and resilience despite the setback.

“Healing and joy are our priorities in a world that often harbors hate,” the organization wrote. “We will not be deterred, and we will not allow hate to stop us from celebrating our pride and resilience.”

They concluded with a defiant message:

“When we fight, we win.”

Despite the vandalism, the Global Black Pride celebration will continue throughout Labor Day weekend. This year marks the first time the event is being hosted in a U.S. city since its inception in 2020.

The festival, which kicked off on Tuesday, features a series of events including workshops, art exhibits, a health conference, and several marches. The event is being held in partnership with Atlanta Black Pride.
