Former U.S. Representative George Santos, who was expelled from Congress last year, is expected to plead guilty to criminal corruption charges on Monday, according to a source familiar with the matter.
Santos, a Republican, faces federal charges including laundering campaign funds to cover personal expenses, charging donors’ credit cards without their consent, and receiving unemployment benefits while employed, among other counts. He has been negotiating a plea deal with prosecutors since December.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Santos is expected to plead guilty to multiple counts when he appears in federal court in Long Island, New York. These accusations led lawmakers to expel him from the House of Representatives in December, after which he remarked, “To hell with this place.”
During his 11 months in office, Santos was embroiled in scandal and isolated by his colleagues after it was revealed that he had fabricated much of his past. A bipartisan investigation by the House Ethics Committee found that he had spent campaign funds on personal luxuries, including Botox, high-end brands like Hermes, and the adult content platform OnlyFans.
Democrat Tom Suozzi won Santos’ former seat, representing a portion of New York City and its eastern suburbs, in a special election held in February.
