Former mayor of a Louisiana town, Misty Clanton, was arrested and charged with third-degree rape involving a minor, just five days after resigning from her position.
Clanton, who stepped down abruptly on July 27, 2024, turned herself in to authorities on August 1 following allegations of sexual misconduct.
The Louisiana State Police reported receiving a tip that Clanton had engaged in inappropriate activities with a minor. In response, the Special Victims Unit conducted interviews with two minors as part of their investigation.
Although the details of these interviews remain confidential, police released a statement indicating that “both juveniles confirmed Clanton had sexual intercourse with one juvenile victim while employed as Mayor.”
In a preemptive move, Clanton notified her office of her intention to take leave two days before her resignation, appointing the local fire chief to serve as acting mayor.
Clanton has maintained her innocence, claiming she was unaware of the charges until the day before she surrendered to law enforcement.
The case highlights serious allegations against a former public official and raises significant legal questions regarding the abuse of power and misconduct in office.
The legal proceedings will be closely watched as they unfold.
