Regla “Su” Becquer, the proprietor of Love and Caring for People LLC, a Texas-based network of unlicensed assisted living homes, has been arrested and charged with murder following the death of a resident earlier this year.
Arlington police are now delving into the circumstances surrounding at least 20 additional deaths at her facilities.
Becquer stands accused of causing the death of Steven Pankratz in January, with Tarrant County court records indicating she remains in custody on two bonds totaling $750,000.
The case has sparked broader concerns about alleged abuses within her establishments.
“We have allegations of abuse, theft, and fraud by Miss Becquer and her company,” remarked Kelly Land, a crisis intervention specialist with the Arlington Police. “The stories we’ve heard from the clients and their families are disturbing and heartbreaking, and we are committed to delivering justice to the families and the victims.”
The Tarrant County medical examiner attributed Pankratz’s death to mixed drug toxicity, noting the presence of trazodone, tramadol, and mirtazapine in his system.
Investigations by the Arlington Police Department have expanded to encompass the unlicensed group homes under Becquer’s control, revealing a troubling pattern linked to over 20 client deaths since September 2022.
Authorities suspect inadequate care practices, including alleged efforts to block medical assistance for residents and sever communication between clients and their families.
Additionally, allegations include unauthorized use of clients’ debit cards and retention of belongings from deceased residents, such as phones and vehicles.
“We’ve uncovered deeply concerning activities within these facilities and are determined to ensure no victims are overlooked,” stated Arlington Police Chief Al Jones. “If you or a loved one has had any association with these homes, or if you know of other locations this company operates, we urge you to come forward. Our ongoing efforts have already resulted in the relocation of several clients to facilities providing proper care, but there may be others who require assistance.”
The investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement works to ascertain the full extent of potential wrongdoing and to provide support to affected individuals and their families.
