A black woman and her daughters are currently detained in Turks and Caicos after she unintentionally traveled to the island with ammunition in her duffel bag.
Sharitta Grier admitted that the duffel bag in question is typically used for storing her firearm and bullets.
She had cleaned out the bag for their trip to Turks and Caicos but inadvertently left two bullets inside.
Despite the oversight, Grier was able to travel to Turks and Caicos because the TSA in Orlando only confiscated her lotion and body spray, missing the ammunition entirely.
Upon arrival, the bullets were discovered by local authorities.
According to a report by Black Enterprise, Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd has confirmed that he met with government officials to “determine how we can expedite their release and prevent this from happening to other Americans in the future.”
Grier spent three nights in jail before being released on bond.
She is currently awaiting her court date set for July 5.
If convicted, firearm and ammunition offenses in Turks and Caicos carry a minimum sentence of 12 years in prison.
