Ex-Bad Boy rapper G. Dep, known for his breakout hits in the early 2000s, has been released from prison after serving 13 years for murder.
The rapper, whose real name is Trevell Coleman, shared his joyous moment with friends and family in a video posted on Instagram on Thursday, April 4, 2024, marking the end of a long chapter behind bars.
According to documents obtained by TMZ Hip Hop from the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, G. Dep was released under the prison’s Limited Credit Time Allowance program.
This program grants qualifying offenders a six-month credit on their sentences, facilitating his early release.
As part of his release conditions, the 49-year-old rapper must adhere to standard parole regulations, including regular check-ins with his parole officer, abstaining from possessing weapons and drugs without medical authorization, and seeking permission for out-of-state travel.
G. Dep’s music career reached its zenith when he signed with Bad Boy Records, owned By Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, producing hits like “Let’s Get It” and earning a gold album for his debut, “Child of the Ghetto.”
However, his trajectory was derailed after he confessed to a murder dating back over 20 years during a drug-induced stupor.
Despite the setback, G. Dep has hinted at a musical comeback and has reportedly been working on new music while incarcerated.
The decision for G. Dep’s release received approval from the court and the original prosecutor in the case.
Furthermore, Governor Kathy Hochul granted him clemency in December 2023, allowing him to be eligible for parole earlier than expected.
Despite his time behind bars, G. Dep managed to earn an associate’s degree, demonstrating his determination to rebuild his life post-incarceration.
